Opal Licklider

She taught them how to read and write,
In the one room school house setting;
The learned politeness and manners,
As a part of the education they were getting.

They learned from her about character,
How to share and what to say;
And back then they talked about God,
She taught them how to pray.

The lessons of life were interwoven,
With math and science and history;
She taught the arts and penmanship,
Then read the books of mystery.

She taught them about how to respect,
And do the best you could;
That life held out an open hand,
We might succeed if we would.

Most of all she taught love,
In everything she offered to us.
There was no doubt that Mrs. Licklider,
Knew the Savior, Lord Jesus.

We need more teachers like her,
That sit behind the desk;
And love the children unconditionally,
That’s why they accept this task.

The new day just started in glory,
The roll is called up there;
And Opal’s name is spoken,
I heard her say clearly, “Here!”
